Cell Phone Radiation Poses Health Risk to Children, Adults

www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org by Deborah Mitchell Some of the most popular cell phones on the market are among the ones that emit the most radiation, placing cell phone users at possible risk of cancer. This warning comes from the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which just released an online consumer guide that provides comprehensive information on cell phone radiation emissions for consumers. Samsung Impression and Motorola RAZR are named as top two cell phones that have the lowest radiation emission. The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit research organization that provides information to consumers on how to protect human health and the environment, rated more than 1000 cell phones that are marketed in the United States. The cell phones found to emit the greatest amount of radiation were the Motorola MOTO Vu204 (Verizon Wireless), T-Mobile myTouch 3G (T-Mobile), Kyocera Jax S1300 (Virgin Mobile), the Blackberry Curve 8330 (Spring, US Cellular, VerizonWireless, MetroPCS), and Motorola W385 (US Cellular, Verizon Wireless). There has been controversy and debate for years about the possible risk of cancer associated with cell phone use. While the EWG study and recent scientific research are not conclusive, together they raise enough red flags for consumers to take note about the risk of cancer. Olga Naidenko, PhD, senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group, noted in the group’s news release that there is enough concern that consumers

In Japanese, mobile phones are called keitai denwa (携帯電話), literally ‘portable telephones,’ and are often known simply as keitai. Much of the Japanese population own cellular phones (especially flip phones), most of which are equipped with enhancements such as video and camera capabilities. As of May 2008, 31. 3% of elementary school students, and 57. 6% of middle school students own a cell phone, with many of them accessing the internet through them. This pervasiveness and the particularities of their usage lead to the development of a mobile phone culture, or ‘keitai culture.’Most cellular phones sold in the last three years have integrated cameras; some more up to date models have high quality digital cameras. Many of the cameras are capable of taking both still and video images. Images can usually be sent to other mobile phones and embedded in messages. In recent years, some cellular phones even have the capability of being used as debit or credit cards and can be swiped through most checkout lines to buy everything from mascara to jet planes, as more and more companies offer catalogs for cell phones. These functionalities include:Some newer models allow the user to watch movies and/or television. Most phones can be

Cell Phone Cancer Risk

www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org – www.emfnews.org by tonyleather | June 14, 2011 In these days of health scare headlines, the fact that many of us have mobiles attached to our hips when not stuck on our ears is giving some cause for concern, especially as the potential exists, supposedly for brain damage, possibly cancerous, from prolonged contact with the cell phone. Various studies have been conducted, suggesting at possible links between heavy cell phone use and illness, but a recently released book, The 4 hour body, authored by Tim Feriss, talks about the previously unsuspected risk involved in keeping cell phones in pockets, close to our bodies, for long periods daily. You need to be a little afraid, because a recent post on Yahoo health, about the 2010 Interphone study, stated that those who have the mobile at their ear for half-an-hour daily, over ten years, are 40% more likely to contract a brain tumour of the type that killed Teddy Kennedy, the Glioma. You could say that the smallness of most cell phones would prohibit them giving off big enough doses of radiation to seriously affect the user, but all effects talked about are long-term ones, especially important to those who spend thei8r waking hours with the devices apparently glued to the sides of their heads. There is, it would appear, a clear and future danger inherent in such over-use. www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org

www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org (AP) A Maine legislator wants to make the state the first to require cell phones to carry warnings that they can cause brain cancer, although there is no consensus among scientists that they do and industry leaders dispute the claim. The now-ubiquitous devices carry such warnings in some countries, though no US states require them, according to the National Conference of State Legislators. A similar effort is afoot in San Francisco, where Mayor Gavin Newsom wants his city to be the nation’s first to require the warnings. Maine Rep. Andrea Boland, D-Sanford, said numerous studies point to the cancer risk, and she has persuaded legislative leaders to allow her proposal to come up for discussion during the 2010 session that begins in January, a session usually reserved for emergency and governors’ bills. Boland herself uses a cell phone, but with a speaker to keep the phone away from her head. She also leaves the phone off unless she’s expecting a call. At issue is radiation emitted by all cell phones. www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org
